When a famous "ghostwriter" (Ewan McGregor) agrees to complete the memoirs of former British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), his agent assures him that this is the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems marked by fate right from the very start: the writer learns that his predecessor, the right arm of Adam Lang, died in a mysterious accident. The young writer, attracted by the challenge and a good salary starts the work but soon finds himself entangled in a web of political and sexual intrigues. Lang is the subject of a scandal about the brutal methods of his administration, and as the ghostwriter digs into the politician's past, he discovers secrets that threaten to jeopardize international relations. Things heat up even more when he discovers that the death of his predecessor was not an accident and that his own life is threatened...
